Can I tow a MINK camper?

HOW TO CHECK

If a MINK is on your wishlist this year, you'll need to make sure you can safely tow one first.

The vast majority of modern cars are more than capable of towing a MINK teardrop camper, thanks to their low max weight of just 750kg & aerodynamic design. You'll also need the correct towing equipment to be able to hitch up.

CHECKING YOUR TOWING ALLOWANCE

The first step is to check whether your vehicle has adequate towing capacity for a MINK camper. There are 2 ways to check - read on below. You can also use our interactive calculator to help.

Method 1: Check your V5C (logbook)

Open your V5C (logbook) document and on the right-hand side of the first inside page, look for the heading "O: Technical permissible maximum towable mass of trailer".

Immediately below this, the subheading "O.1: braked (kg)" is the figure you're looking for.

If this figure is 750 kg or more, your vehicle can tow a MINK camper!

Method 2: Check your VIN plate

If you don't have your V5C to hand, you can calculate your towing allowance using your VIN plate, which typically lists 4 figures:

The maximum allowed weight of the vehicle, when fully laden.

The maximum allowed combined weight of the vehicle and a towed trailer, both fully laden.

The maximum allowed weight over each axle (front and rear).

To calculate your towing allowance, simply subtract the GVW from the GTW - if the result is 750 kg or more, you can tow a MINK camper!

TOWING EQUIPMENT

Once you've confirmed that your vehicle has adequate towing capacity for a MINK camper, you'll need to get the correct towing equipment fitted to your vehicle (if you haven't already) before you can hit the road.

TOW BAR

The first thing you'll need is a tow bar fitted to your vehicle, with a 50mm tow ball. This will enable you to "hitch" the MINK to your tow vehicle via the coupling head at the front of the MINK's draw bar.

There are various types of tow bars available for different vehicles, but they all function in the same way and the differences are mostly aesthetic.
A fixed flange tow bar, used for towing caravans, campers and trailers.

The most commonly fitted type of tow bar in the UK. The tow ball is bolted to the tow bar with 2 x 24mm bolts.

Fixed flange tow bars are typically the most cost-effective of all tow bars, but there are some considerations to make:

  • The tow ball is fixed in place permanently; both the ball and electrics are always visible.
  • If your vehicle has parking sensors fitted, it may pick the tow ball up as an obstruction.

Visually much the same as a fixed flange tow bar, but the neck & tow ball can be removed when not in use. This is a good option if you don’t like how your vehicle looks with a tow ball fixed in place.

Again, there a couple of considerations:

  • Detachable tow bars are usually a bit more expensive than fixed ones.
  • If you lose the neck, they can be expensive to replace.
A fixed swan neck tow bar

Swan neck tow bars are the most common type in the EU, but they’re gradually gaining in popularity in the UK too, as the design is a little “sleeker”.

They’re less likely to trigger parking sensors as the neck is narrower than a flange tow bar.

They have the same drawbacks of a fixed flange tow bar in that, once they’re fitted, they can’t be removed and are permanently visible.

Detachable swan neck tow bars offer the best of both worlds – nicer looking than a flange tow bar, but can also be removed when not in use!

The main drawback is that they’re typically the most pricey of all tow bar types.

TOWING ELECTRICS

When you have your tow bar fitted, the installer will likely ask you if you also need towing electrics fitted, and if so, which type.

Ideally you'll want 13-pin electrics (commonly referred to as a "Euro socket") which will power the driving lights of the MINK, as well as charging the MINK's leisure battery.

If you already have a tow bar with 7-pin towing electrics fitted, you can still connect to the MINK with an adapter, but you should be aware that this will power the driving lights only.

Calculate your towing allowance

Towing capacity calculator

Use your V5C or VIN plate to confirm whether your vehicle can tow a MINK (750kg MTPLM).

Enter the braked (kg) figure from your V5C

Make sure to enter the braked (kg) figure, not unbraked (kg).

If your V5C doesn’t show towing limits, use the VIN plate method or consult your handbook/manufacturer.
